Bee Ready for Summer: Local Beekeepers Get the Buzz on Hive Health

Local beekeepers gathered for a practical and informative day of learning, sharing knowledge and preparing their hives for the warmer months, thanks to a collaboration between the Mudgee Bee Group and Watershed Landcare.

The Bee Ready for Summer workshop brought together beekeepers of all experience levels, from those just starting their beekeeping journey to seasoned professionals, with a particular focus on managing the growing threat of Varroa mite.

The session was facilitated by Alex Schellenberg, Bee Biosecurity Officer with the NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD), who shared valuable industry knowledge and practical advice on protecting bee colonies.

With Varroa mite presenting an ongoing challenge for Australia’s beekeeping industry, the workshop provided an important opportunity for local hive owners to better understand the pest, recognise potential problems and learn effective monitoring and management techniques.

One of the highlights of the day was a hands-on hive inspection, where participants were able to observe a live Varroa mite check and gain a better understanding of the processes involved in maintaining healthy colonies.

Following a lunch break, the afternoon session turned its attention to summer hive preparation, with practical advice on keeping colonies healthy and productive as temperatures increased.

Beyond the technical information, the workshop was also a wonderful opportunity for members of the local beekeeping community to connect, exchange experiences and learn from one another.

Whether managing a single backyard hive or a larger beekeeping operation, the importance of staying informed and taking a proactive approach to hive health was a key message throughout the day.

Congratulations to the Mudgee Bee Group and Watershed Landcare for bringing together another valuable learning opportunity for our regional community, supporting local beekeepers and the important role bees play in our environment and agricultural industries.
