There was welcome news for Blayney’s older residents and the volunteers and staff who support them, with confirmation the Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) will continue as a standalone program through to mid-2029.
The announcement by Federal Health and Ageing Minister Mark Butler provides some much-needed certainty for Blayney Meals on Wheels and, importantly, the local people who rely on the service to remain independent and living safely in their own homes.
While Meals on Wheels might be best known for delivering a nutritious meal to the door, anyone involved with the organisation knows it is about so much more.
That familiar knock at the door can mean a friendly face, a conversation, a wellbeing check and an important connection with the wider community – particularly for older residents living alone.
Blayney Meals on Wheels is proudly part of the broader CHSP Alliance, which has advocated for the continuation of the program and recognition of the important role these community-based services play across Australia.
The extension through to mid-2029 gives organisations including Blayney Meals on Wheels greater certainty to continue doing what they do best – supporting older people to maintain their independence, stay connected with their communities and continue living well at home.
It is also welcome recognition of the incredible contribution made by the volunteers who give their time to ensure the service continues locally.
For Blayney, it means a valued community service can keep delivering far more than just a meal – and that is certainly something worth celebrating.
