Members of the Oberon Men’s Shed enjoyed what many described as one of the organisation’s most memorable excursions when they travelled beyond “Woop Woop” to the Kingdom of Fermanagh earlier this month.
Around 20 Shed members visited the property of local collector Matt, affectionately dubbed “King Matt” for the day, where they were given fascinating insight into a remarkable collection of military vehicles, machinery, and memorabilia accumulated over several generations.
Throughout the tour, Matt shared his extensive knowledge of tanks and military history, bringing the collection to life with a blend of historical facts, personal stories and plenty of humour. Visitors spent several hours exploring the displays, learning about the role various vehicles played in conflicts throughout history and hearing the stories behind many of the exhibits.
A highlight of the day was the unveiling of a fully operational Matilda tank. For many in attendance, the opportunity to see the historic vehicle up close was impressive enough, but those who climbed aboard were treated to a ride across the property, creating an unforgettable experience.
The group was made to feel welcome throughout the visit, with Matt’s family and a team of loyal helpers contributing to the day’s success. A barbecue lunch and afternoon tea provided welcome opportunities for members to relax, swap stories and reflect on the unique experience.
The excursion provided not only a fascinating look at military history but also an opportunity for members to enjoy a day of camaraderie and conversation outside their regular activities.
As the group departed the Kingdom of Fermanagh, there was a clear consensus that the Men’s Shed committee may have set the bar exceptionally high for future outings.
