Students from Ilford Public School and Hampton Public School recently stepped into the world of engineering, design and innovation thanks to a visit from the UNSW MakerBus, delivering an exciting hands-on STEM experience to the region.
The mobile makerspace visited the schools through a partnership between the STEM Enrichment team and the Central West Academy of STEM Excellence (CWASE), giving students the opportunity to explore science, technology, engineering and mathematics through practical, curriculum-aligned activities.
Throughout the day, students worked alongside facilitators from the University of New South Wales to build mechanical dragonflies and lanterns while tackling a range of real-world engineering and design challenges.
The workshops also introduced students to cutting-edge technology, including 3D printers, laser cutters, solar panels and electronic circuitry, allowing them to experiment with equipment rarely available in small rural school settings.
STEM Project Officer for CWASE, Emma Francis, said the experience was an invaluable opportunity for students to engage with STEM in a practical and meaningful way.
“The MakerBus gave our students the chance to explore new technologies and develop their problem-solving skills through hands-on learning,” Ms Francis said.
“It was wonderful to see their enthusiasm and creativity as they worked through the engineering challenges. Experiences like these help students see the exciting possibilities STEM offers and inspire them to think about future learning and career pathways.”
The visit highlighted the benefits of collaboration among UNSW, the STEM Enrichment team, and the Central West Academy of STEM Excellence, ensuring that students in regional communities have access to high-quality learning experiences that inspire curiosity and innovation.
By bringing advanced technology directly into rural schools, the MakerBus continues to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world applications, helping equip students with the skills and confidence needed for the future.
