A unique series of North Indian Classical music performances is set to arrive in the Central West later this month, with internationally recognised Sarangi master Sangeet Mishra joining Bathurst-based Tabla player Rob Shannon for three distinctly different concerts across Bathurst and Orange.
The “Ragas in the Central West” concert series will feature performances at Keystone 1889 on May 22 and May 24, as well as a special performance at the Uniting Church Orange on May 23.
Presented as an immersive musical experience, the concerts will explore the rich traditions of North Indian Classical music, with performances structured around “ragas” — melodic frameworks traditionally associated with different times of day.
Rob Shannon said the music offers audiences something vastly different from most Western classical styles.
“This music is mesmerising, yet highly improvised. As a form of classical music, it is vastly different to what we are used to,” he said.
“The use of melody and rhythm as its main two characteristics, as opposed to employing constant harmonic changes to move the music forward.”
Born into one of India’s most respected musical families, Sangeet Mishra is an eighth-generation Sarangi player whose family ties to Benares — the holy city on the banks of the Ganges River — have shaped his soulful and spiritual musical style.
Now based between Benares and Mumbai, he tours internationally and is regarded as one of India’s leading Sarangi performers. The Sarangi itself is a bowed string instrument known for its haunting, almost human-like sound.
The series will also showcase a visual element, with Sydney artist Annabel McLure presenting projected imagery of sunrise and sunset scenes along the Ganges River during selected performances.
Concertgoers can expect three very different experiences, including an intimate church performance in Orange and a relaxed Sunday morning concert in Bathurst, where guests are encouraged to bring cushions and settle in for a more laid-back atmosphere.
