The Glen Museum marked its 50th anniversary in style on Sunday 4 May 2025, with a vibrant community celebration that brought Portland’s history to life. The event drew visitors of all ages to honour half a century since the creation of the Charlie Pinch collection.
The day began with an official ceremony at 11am, complete with a special cake-cutting to commemorate the milestone. Visitors then explored the museum’s extensive exhibits and storage sheds, guided by volunteers eager to share stories from Portland’s past. The gift shop proved popular, offering limited edition books, historic maps, and postcards that celebrated the town’s unique heritage.
Among the highlights was the chance to meet a local expert on antique dolls, who offered a glimpse into a rarely discussed but fascinating aspect of the region’s history.
Families enjoyed Charlie’s Treasure Hunt, a free children’s activity that had little ones racing around the site, while adults tried their luck in a raffle boasting a range of prizes. Visitors were also treated to delicious food and photo opportunities with Superman, adding a modern twist to a heritage celebration.
Stephen Graham, President of The Glen Museum committee, said, “This was a wonderful milestone for the museum and for Portland. We’re proud to celebrate our history and we’re thrilled to see so many people come together to enjoy a day filled with fun, memories, and community spirit.”
The Glen Museum also expressed its heartfelt thanks to the many local businesses who supported the 50th anniversary event, particularly in recognition of the Charlie Pinch collection and its formal establishment at The Foundations seven years ago. Donations for the raffle and food were received from nearly every business in town, a show of generosity that reflected Portland’s strong community values.
“This level of support demonstrates what makes Portland so special,” Mr Graham said. “It’s also a recognition that by working together, we can regenerate our town and create a future as proud as our past. The Glen Museum and The Foundations are on track to becoming one of the State’s premier tourist attractions.”
