One of the Bathurst region’s most beautiful historic villages is preparing for a very special weekend, with Rockley celebrating 175 years on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 September.
Officially gazetted in 1851, Rockley’s story actually began well before then. A village reserve was marked out at the present site in 1833 as pastoral settlement expanded through the district, with local landowners petitioning for a township in 1850.
Agriculture and grazing were at the heart of the village’s beginnings, while the discovery of copper in the district in 1847 and gold in 1851 brought new residents, businesses and opportunity.
Rockley grew into a thriving community, at one time home to several hotels, merchants, a barber, butcher, baker, blacksmith, billiard hall and more.
Many reminders of those early days remain, including the historic flour mill, built in 1862 and now home to the Rockley Mill and Stables Museum, along with beautiful churches, the School of Arts and heritage buildings that give Rockley its wonderful character.
The 175th celebrations will be a chance to step into that history – and enjoy everything the village has to offer today.
Saturday begins with a 9.30am service at St Patrick’s Catholic Church, followed by artisan stalls at Kookaburra Cottage and the official opening at Rockley Mill and Stables Museum at 11am. The afternoon will include a community certificate presentation, guided walking tour, BYO picnic or BBQ and family games at Stevens Park.
Celebrations continue Sunday with the Rockley Artisans Markets, the museum open from 9.30am, and Rockley on Film and Line Dancing at The Rockley Pub. The weekend will conclude with a special talk at St Peter’s Anglican Church at 2.30pm, followed by a service at 4pm.
More than simply marking a date on the calendar, the weekend is an opportunity to celebrate the generations of families, farmers, businesses and community members who have shaped this very special village.
