The historic village of Carcoar welcomed a welcome boost of energy on 29 March, with the reopening of The Village Grocer under new owners, husband-and-wife duo Neil Varcoe and Seven Network’s TV personality Edwina Bartholomew.
Locals and visitors turned out in strong numbers to support the reopening, an early sign of confidence in the revitalised café and its place at the heart of the village. For a town known for its rich heritage and tight-knit community, the return of a much-loved local business is no small moment.
The Village Grocer is already making its mark with a simple but effective formula — great coffee, quality food and friendly service. There is a clear focus on showcasing local produce, with the menu and shelves reflecting the region’s growers and makers. That commitment to “local first” is evident in every detail, creating an authentic experience that feels both welcoming and distinctly Central West.
Adding another layer to the story is the connection to Saltash Farm, the couple’s boutique accommodation venture currently under development in Carcoar and slated to open in 2026. In a hands-on touch, Edwina Bartholomew is producing homemade jams on-site at Saltash Farm, now available for purchase through the café — a small detail that speaks volumes about the personal investment behind the business.
The reopening has already become something of a meeting point, with the café buzzing as locals reconnect and travellers pause to take in the village’s charm.
For those passing through, or looking for a reason to explore Carcoar, The Village Grocer offers exactly that — a fresh stop that blends quality, community and a strong sense of place.
