Global Luxury Brand to Make World First Debut in Wolgan Valley

A major global tourism announcement has placed the Wolgan Valley firmly on the world stage, with Emirates and Marriott International confirming plans to open the world’s first-ever Ritz-Carlton Lodge in regional New South Wales.

Set to open in mid-2026, Emirates Wolgan Valley, a Ritz-Carlton Lodge will be a 40-key, all-inclusive luxury retreat located on a vast 7,000-acre conservation reserve within the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area. The project marks the global debut of The Ritz-Carlton Lodge concept and represents a significant milestone for regional luxury tourism in NSW.

Since acquiring the Wolgan Valley property in 2006, Emirates has invested more than AU$150 million in developing one of Australia’s first conservation-based luxury resorts. That investment has included the careful restoration of historic buildings, including the original 1832 homestead, alongside large-scale environmental initiatives such as the planting of more than one million native trees to restore local ecosystems.

Emirates has now committed a further AU$50 million to transform the resort in partnership with Marriott International, creating a world-class destination that blends refined luxury with deep respect for place, culture and landscape. During the unavoidable closure of Wolgan Valley Road in 2023, Emirates continued to maintain the site with locally employed staff, reinforcing its long-term commitment to the region.

Sir Tim Clark, President of Emirates Airline, said the announcement reflected decades of engagement with Australia beyond aviation.

“In our 30 years of operations in Australia, Emirates has consistently sought to deliver value to our customers, and to Australia,” he said. “Our unwavering commitment to the resort leads us to today’s announcement of an exciting agreement with Marriott International to open the world’s first Ritz-Carlton Lodge.”

Sir Tim said the lodge would be both a world-class tourism offering and a driver of regional prosperity. “For us, Emirates Wolgan Valley, a Ritz-Carlton Lodge will not only be an extraordinary resort appealing to discerning travellers seeking to be close to nature, but also a powerful engine for local economic growth, helping to rejuvenate the Wolgan Valley locality,” he said.

“We are deeply grateful for the support from the Federal Government, and for our partnerships with the State Government, Lithgow City Council, and the Wolgan Valley community who have helped Emirates make this project possible.”

The development is expected to create close to 150 local jobs and generate new opportunities for regional suppliers, tradies and producers. Guests will access the lodge via four-wheel drive along the Donkey Steps or by helicopter, making the journey part of the immersive experience.

Rajeev Menon, President Asia Pacific (excluding China) for Marriott International, said the collaboration brought together two global leaders in travel.

“We’re honoured to collaborate with Emirates on this milestone development,” he said. “Marking the brand’s lodge debut globally, Emirates Wolgan Valley, a Ritz-Carlton Lodge will be a major drawcard for our network of 260 million loyal Marriott Bonvoy members around the world.”

The lodge will occupy less than two per cent of the conservation reserve, offering guests rare access to pristine landscapes, ancient Wollemi Pines, abundant wildlife and some of the clearest night skies in the world. Plans include private pool villas, immersive guided experiences, a signature restaurant, spa, equestrian facilities and a dedicated naturalist hub.

Local leaders have welcomed the announcement. Lithgow City Council Mayor Cassandra Coleman said, This is really important for the majority of the Lithgow community and demonstrates exactly what good corporate citizenship is all about.”

The Honourable Paul Toole described the project as a source of pride for the region.

“I think this is an absolutely exciting announcement that’s been made here today,” he said.

“To have a unique site like this in our very own backyard is something that all of the community and the surrounding area can be very proud of.”

Mr Toole said the economic flow-on effects would be substantial.

“The opportunity now to actually see jobs in the local area, the opportunity for our local suppliers and tradies to go and provide produce and services to the resort, is about driving economic activity,” he said. “This is going to be a big benefit… We’re talking about global announcements being made right here in our very own backyard of Lithgow. It’s exciting. Let’s get on board, and let’s see it happen.”
