NSW Police are urging residents across the Lithgow, Bathurst, Blayney and Oberon LGAs to take extra care securing their homes, vehicles and valuables, as local officers continue promoting the “Lock it or Lose it” campaign.
The renewed warning follows a recent increase in break-and-enters and thefts from motor vehicles, with police reminding the community that many incidents are opportunistic and often involve unlocked cars or homes.
A major focus of the campaign is the theft of wallets, handbags, and keys left in vehicles or easily accessible in homes.
Police warn that if a wallet is stolen, offenders can gain access not only to cash and bank cards, but also to personal identification and sensitive information that can be used for identity theft.
The campaign also highlights the risks of leaving car keys near doors or windows, with thieves able to use stolen keys to access vehicles — and in some cases, homes and garages.
NSW Police are encouraging residents to lock doors and windows, remove valuables from vehicles, keep wallets and handbags out of sight, and store keys in secure locations away from entry points.
Simple steps such as checking vehicles are locked overnight and avoiding leaving important documents inside cars can significantly reduce the risk of becoming a victim.
According to NSW Police crime prevention information, securing valuables and limiting access to keys can help prevent opportunistic theft and protect both property and personal identity.
