A weekend of creativity, connection and getting your hands a little muddy is coming to Rydal this November, with The Earthen Explorer hosting its first Frolic & Clay retreat.
Taking place at Rydal Showground from Friday 13 to Sunday 15 November, the three-day experience invites participants to slow down, explore the natural environment and discover the possibilities of creating art using locally sourced clay.
Set amongst the beautiful bushland of Wiradjuri Country, the retreat will combine hands-on creative workshops, guided nature experiences and plenty of opportunities to connect with like-minded people.
Participants will learn how to identify and test natural clay, explore traditional techniques including cob sculpting and earthen plastering, and create their own unique artwork.
But this weekend is about much more than learning a new skill.
The retreat forms part of a special community project supporting the Lithgow Area Women’s Shed, which has been working towards completing its community building following the devastating 2019–2020 bushfires.
Each participant will create an individual earthen tile, using clay sourced from the building site and surrounding areas. These pieces will eventually form a larger collaborative artwork displayed in the entrance of the new Women’s Shed and Community Building.
It’s a wonderful opportunity to contribute to a lasting community project while learning something new.
The weekend also includes a guided walk with Lithgow Landcare, nature meditation, camping, meals and a take-home Earthen Explorer Kit (pictured).
No previous artistic experience is necessary, and the retreat is family-friendly and alcohol-free.
A portion of places has been subsidised for local community members, helping make the experience more accessible.
General admission is listed at $450, with limited places available.
