Gone Fishing Weekend Casts Off at Lake Oberon

Gone Fishing Weekend 17-18 Oct 2026

There are few better ways to spend a spring weekend than getting outdoors, trying something new and enjoying one of the region’s great natural assets — and Gone Fishing Weekend is giving families the perfect excuse to do just that.

The NSW Government has expanded Gone Fishing Day into a full weekend celebration for 2026, with activities taking place across the state on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 October.

Here in Oberon, the celebrations will head to Reef Reserve at Lake Oberon, where Oberon Council has partnered with NSW DPIRD to offer two free fishing workshops on Saturday 17 October.

Designed for all ages, the sessions are a great opportunity for complete beginners to learn the basics of fishing in a relaxed and supportive environment.

Participants will receive hands-on instruction from the DPIRD Fishcare team, covering everything from baiting and knots to casting, before putting those new skills into practice during a supervised fishing session.

Best of all, there is no need to have your own fishing gear, with all equipment supplied.

It makes Gone Fishing Weekend a particularly easy day out for families — a chance to get the kids away from the screens, spend some time by the water and perhaps discover a new hobby along the way.

Parents and guardians are required to accompany children under 16, with participants encouraged to wear enclosed shoes and a hat, bring a water bottle and be sun safe.

Places are limited to 25 people per session, so early registration is recommended through Humanitix – https://events.humanitix.com/come-fish-with-us-free-fishing-workshops.

Whether you are a regular angler or have never cast a line before, Gone Fishing Weekend is a great opportunity to enjoy Lake Oberon, learn a few new skills and spend a spring day outdoors with family and friends.
