The Foundations Portland will host its first Family Fishing Open Day at the Millpond on Sunday, 13 September 2026, from 10am to 2pm.
The free community event will bring together families, experienced anglers and first-time fishers to enjoy one of Portland’s most distinctive outdoor spaces while celebrating six years since the Millpond opened.
The Millpond was established in 2020, supported by a successful fish relocation and restocking program involving fish from Winburndale Dam. It has since become an important recreational asset and a much-loved part of The Foundations precinct.
The Foundations’ Chief Reactivation Officer, Rich Evans, said the inaugural event would give more people an opportunity to discover the Millpond.
“The Millpond has become a wonderful local asset, and this event is about bringing the community together to celebrate its first six years,” Mr Evans said.
“It will be a relaxed day where families can spend time outdoors, try their hand at fishing and learn more about the story behind the Millpond and its fish population.”
Every registered participant will receive an entry in the lucky-door prize draw, with an additional ticket awarded for every fish caught during the event.
The Family Fishing Open Day is being delivered in association with the Wallerawang Acclimatisation Society, whose members will share their local fishing knowledge and the story of the Winburndale fish relocation.
The free event has been made possible through the generous support of Masterton Homes, Custom Earthworx and The Foundations Portland.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own fishing equipment, sun protection and suitable clothing for the conditions.
