The Catholic Diocese of Bathurst will launch Australia’s first Diocesan Tree Protection Plan on the World Day of Prayer for Creation, 1 September 2026.
To be launched by Bishop of Bathurst Michael McKenna, the comprehensive plan will protect trees on land in the care of the Diocese, including parishes, schools, presbyteries and cemeteries, from unnecessary removal or inappropriate pruning.
Inspired by a similar plan established by the Irish Bishops Conference in 2023, the Bathurst initiative is the first of its kind in Australia.
The plan also sets a goal of increasing tree canopy cover across Diocesan land to 30 per cent, helping to build greater resilience to ecological challenges including drought, flood, fire, air pollution and increased winds.
Developed by the Diocesan Laudato Si’ Group in consultation with key stakeholders and Catholic Education, the plan will be launched at the Blayney Eco Hub – another Diocesan project inspired by Laudato Si’ and focused on ecological education, spirituality and advocacy.
Bishop McKenna congratulated those involved in developing the policy.
“Our words about care for our common home need to be authenticated by what we do where we have the responsibility and the opportunity to act,” he said.
The community is warmly invited to attend the launch ceremony at the Blayney Eco Hub from 2pm on Tuesday, 1 September.
