Winter Skin & Wellness: Preparing for Spring and Hay Fever Season

As we move through the final weeks of winter and head towards September, now is the perfect time to give your skin and overall wellbeing a little extra attention.

Winter can be particularly tough on our skin. Cold air, wind, indoor heating and long hot showers can strip away moisture, leaving skin feeling dry, tight, sensitive and sometimes a little dull. This is the time to focus on hydration and repairing your skin barrier.

Look for nourishing moisturisers and serums containing ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, ceramides and antioxidants & of course don’t forget your SPF – UV damage happens all year round, even on cold or cloudy days!

A few simple winter-to-spring tips:

  • Avoid excessively hot showers, which can further dry the skin.
  • Moisturise your face and body daily, ideally straight after showering.
  • Keep drinking plenty of water, even when you’re not feeling as thirsty.
  • Gently exfoliate to remove dry, dull surface skin – but don’t overdo it.
  • Continue wearing SPF 30–50 every day.
  • Give dry hands, lips and feet some extra TLC.

September also signals the beginning of hay fever season for many of us. Pollen can leave more than just your nose and eyes irritated – the skin around the eyes and nose can become red, dry and sensitive too.

If you’re prone to hay fever, start preparing before symptoms are in full swing. Keep windows closed on particularly windy or high-pollen days, shower and wash your hair after spending extended time outdoors, change your pillowcases regularly and avoid rubbing itchy eyes. Speak with your pharmacist or GP about the best hay fever treatment options for you.

Most importantly, listen to your skin. As the seasons change, what worked beautifully through winter may need adjusting for spring.

A little preparation now can have you heading into September with healthier, happier skin and ready to enjoy everything spring has to offer!
