With another bush fire season on the horizon, the Chifley Operations Support Brigade is calling on Bathurst, Oberon, and Lithgow residents to get prepared now, rather than waiting until a fire is at their door.
“We don’t want to alarm people with the potential of a busy spring and summer ahead, but instead have them be aware, prepared and ready to act if and when the time comes,” Support Senior Deputy Captain Rachael White said.
The Chifley Operations Support Brigade plays a vital role in supporting NSW Rural Fire Service operations across the Chifley District and beyond.
While firefighters are the public face of the RFS, many volunteers work behind the scenes in specialist support roles, including Aviation, Communications and Logistics, and Community Engagement, helping keep operations running safely and effectively so frontline crews have the support they need when it matters most.
“One of the most important things every household can do before the season begins is create a Bush Fire Survival Plan,” White said. “Having a plan means your family knows what to do, where to go and when to leave if a fire threatens your area. It’s just as important to practise that plan, so everyone understands their role before an emergency happens.”
Residents planning pile burns are reminded to notify the NSW Rural Fire Service before lighting up. Notifying a burn helps prevent unnecessary emergency calls to 000 (Triple Zero) and ensures emergency services are aware of legal fire activity in the area.
The Chifley Operations Support Brigade is also using the lead-up to the season to encourage new volunteers to come forward.
“Protecting our communities is a shared responsibility, and there are many ways to get involved,” White said. “If you’ve ever considered volunteering with the NSW RFS but don’t see yourself as a firefighter, there are a range of rewarding operational support roles available. Whether your strengths lie in communication, community engagement, logistics or aviation support, your skills could make a real difference during emergencies and community events.”
Every volunteer plays a vital role in keeping the community safe, and residents are encouraged to take a few simple steps today that could make all the difference tomorrow.
