Two dedicated members of the Lithgow and District Rescue Squad have been recognised as finalists in the Rotary Emergency Services Community Awards (RESCA).
Nathan Mas-Stephens and Sally Romanous, both volunteers with VRA Rescue NSW, have been named among this year’s finalists, placing them alongside emergency service personnel from across the state who have been acknowledged for their service, leadership and commitment to community.
The RESCA Awards recognise emergency service personnel who embody Rotary’s motto of “Service Above Self”. Community members nominate the people they admire for their integrity, contribution and willingness to go above and beyond in supporting others.
For Nathan and Sally, the nomination is a significant acknowledgement of the many hours they give to the Lithgow community through their volunteer rescue work. Like many emergency services volunteers, their contribution often happens quietly and behind the scenes — through training, responding to incidents, supporting their team and being ready to assist when the community needs help most.
Both are also well known locally beyond their VRA roles. Nathan is Captain of the Lithgow and District Rescue Squad, works as the Community Development Worker at LINC, and balances his volunteer commitment with life as part of a young family. Sally is Operations Officer with the squad and has recently opened Moons, a wonderful Lebanese restaurant in Lithgow, adding to the town’s growing food and hospitality scene while continuing her volunteer service.
Their nominations highlight the many ways local people contribute to community life — through their paid work, their businesses, their volunteering and their willingness to step forward when others need help.
VRA Rescue NSW volunteers play a vital role in emergency response across regional communities, and local squads rely on people who are prepared to give their time, skills and energy in service to others. Nathan and Sally’s recognition as finalists reflects not only their personal commitment, but also the strength and importance of the Lithgow and District Rescue Squad.
