Lithgow exhibition shows diverse local scene

Is there a noticeable ‘Lithgow’ influence on the work of local artists? A new art exhibition ‘Common Ground’ at the Union Theatre Gallery searches for common themes across works as diverse as sculpture, photography, painting, printmaking, mixed-media and textiles.

“These works are shaped by the region’s dramatic landscape, industrial history, and strong sense of community,” said curator, Arts OutWest’s Steven Cavanagh. “While each artist offers a unique perspective, their works are connected through a shared experience of place and belonging.”

“The exhibition reflects just some of the stories, relationships and environments that influence creative life in the Lithgow area today,” said Mr Cavanagh. “Together, these artists reveal the richness of local artistic practice and the powerful connections that emerge through living, creating, and exhibiting within the same community.”

Artists featured are all from the Lithgow local government area: Jane Canfield, Lise Edwards, Harrie Fasher, Anne Graham, Caitlin Graham, Brett Groves, Wendy Hawkes, Gabriella Hegyes, Tim Johnman, Jess Leffley, Sarah O’Sullivan, Gary Pettitt, Jenny Pienaar, Julie Visible, and Leanne Wicks.

The exhibition is open Friday to Sunday, 10 am – 4 pm, until 28 June at the Union Theatre Gallery, 65 Bridge St, Lithgow.

The Union Theatre Gallery is a new partnership venture between Arts OutWest and Lithgow City Council. Lithgow City Council is one of 12 contributing LGAs to the Arts OutWest regional arts development program, also supported by state and federal governments.

This exhibition of new works follows an exhibition of historic works by women artists in the local council collection back in March.

The ‘Common Ground’ exhibition coincides with the Arts OutWest Regional Gathering and AGM on Sunday 21 June, which will include a tour of the exhibition and a talk by some of the featured artists. RSVP for the event via the artsoutwest.org.au website.
