WLONK! Ironfest returns to Portland.

Step out of the ordinary and into the unexpected as Ironfest takes over The Foundations this April. Dress up, lean in and become part of it.

There’s no easy way to explain Ironfest, and that’s exactly why it works.

Returning to The Foundations in Portland on April 18 and 19, Ironfest 2026 comes with a simple directive: come “wlonk”. It’s a word that doesn’t try too hard to define itself. At its heart, it’s about letting go of the expected and stepping into something more imaginative. Armour, steampunk, fantasy, historical dress or something entirely your own, if it feels a bit out there, it probably fits.

For more than two decades, Ironfest has built a reputation as one of the Central West’s most distinctive events. It’s part festival, part spectacle, part creative explosion. Across the weekend, blacksmiths fire up their forges, re-enactors bring moments from history back to life, and performers, artists and makers fill the space with movement, colour and noise.

But Ironfest isn’t just something you watch. It’s something you step into.

That’s where “wlonk” comes in. It’s not just a theme, it’s an invitation. To dress up. To play a role. To suspend reality for a day or two and become part of the atmosphere. Whether you arrive in full costume or simply lean into the spirit of it, the line between performer and audience quickly disappears.

There’s a sense of unpredictability running through the whole event. Around one corner, you might find medieval combat, around another a pipe band, a fantasy creature or a maker demonstrating centuries-old craft. It’s this mix of history, art and imagination that gives Ironfest its energy and keeps people coming back year after year.

Set against the industrial backdrop of The Foundations, the festival feels right at home. Steel, fire and creativity echo the site’s past, while the event itself pushes into something new. It’s a setting that brings out everything Ironfest stands for, raw, expressive and a little unconventional.

With gates open from 10 am each day and entry just a $10 donation, it’s an easy weekend out that invites everyone to take part, not just attend.

Because that’s the thing about Ironfest. You don’t just go, you wlonk.

And in Portland this April, that might be exactly what’s needed.
