After years of closures, repairs and setbacks, the road back to Jenolan Caves is finally nearing its destination, with the iconic attraction set to reopen to visitors in 2027.
Bushfires, floods and the pandemic have meant Jenolan Caves has spent more days closed than open since 2020, but major works are now progressing across the Jenolan Karst Conservation Reserve.
Transport for NSW, Jenolan Caves Reserve Trust, NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service and the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water have been working together on road, infrastructure and precinct upgrades.
A new accessible Blue Lake boardwalk has been completed, along with improvements to tracks and trails, while drainage, culverts and other infrastructure are being upgraded to improve resilience against future fires, floods and geohazards.
Historic Caves House is also nearing completion of a major restoration and refurbishment, including new ensuites, air-conditioning and improved accessibility.
And there is another big drawcard waiting for visitors when Jenolan reopens more caves will be available for public tours and exploration than ever before.
Member for Bathurst Paul Toole said the reopening would be an important milestone for the region and a welcome boost for local businesses, jobs and tourism.
While Two Mile Road has been returned to a drivable condition, it will not reopen to public traffic. Instead, visitors will park at a new carpark at the top of Two Mile Road and travel to the caves via shuttle bus.
After a long wait, one of the Central West’s greatest natural treasures is getting ready to welcome visitors once again.
