A new grassroots charity is making a real difference for men experiencing homelessness or doing it tough across the Bathurst region.
Founded by a small group of local residents, Blokes Bags was established last year after volunteers recognised a growing need to support men who were sleeping rough or facing significant hardship. Within just two weeks of launching the idea, the group had assembled 50 backpacks filled with essential everyday items, thanks to generous donations from the community.
The backpacks were distributed directly to men in need and to local charities, providing practical support while also reminding recipients that their community cares.
The initiative has continued to grow, with Blokes Bags now launching Facebook and Instagram pages to raise awareness and encourage further community involvement. The charity is supported by several well-known Bathurst identities, as well as founder Karen Bowles and a representative from a local not-for-profit organisation.
The next step for the group is its first major fundraising event, to be held on Thursday, August 13, at Little Alberts inside the Victoria Hotel.
Seven local musicians have generously donated their time to perform, with every dollar raised through ticket sales going directly towards creating another round of backpacks for distribution later this year.
Karen Bowles said the overwhelming community response to the project has highlighted just how willing Bathurst residents are to lend a hand when they see a need.
“Our aim is simply to provide practical support and let people know they’re not forgotten,” she said.
