Tim Mcdonald Memorial

A special tree dedication ceremony was held at the Wallerawang Arboretum on 12 June, marking the 30th anniversary of the loss of Lidsdale resident Trooper Timothy John McDonald of the Special Air Service Regiment (SASR), who was among those killed in the Townsville Black Hawk helicopter tragedy on 12 June 1996.

Best known as just Tim, the memorial was the result of a heartfelt initiative led by respected community member Jo Koleda, a lifelong friend of the McDonald family who attended school with Tim and has remained closely connected to the family over many years.

For Tim’s family, the dedication represents far more than a memorial. It provides a lasting place for reflection and remembrance, honouring a life that, while tragically cut short, was defined by commitment, dedication and the positive impact he had on those around him.

Those gathered reflected on the many lives Tim touched and the enduring memories held by family, friends and the wider community. The tree now stands as a living tribute, with the hope that it will continue to grow and flourish for generations to come, just as Tim’s memory lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

The family also acknowledged the generosity and support of those who helped bring the project to fruition, including Graeme Glazebrook and the Wallerawang Community and Sports Club, Lee Blaker from Hard Rock Memorials, Mark Watchorn, James Knox and the volunteers at the Arboretum, the Wallerawang Lidsdale Progress Association and Geoff Welsman.
