Central West Village Voice Community Manager Karen Purser recently attended a special screening of “Boss Cat” at Sydney’s iconic State Theatre, celebrating a film with strong connections to the Central West.
Shot across Lithgow, Wallerawang and parts of the Blue Mountains, Boss Cat showcases not only the beauty of the region but also the talents of many local people involved in the production.
Karen, well known throughout the region for her community spirit, creativity and passion for local storytelling, was among those who appeared as an extra in the film alongside other local residents. A talented writer and face painter, Karen has long been a champion of the region and was delighted to see the finished production on the big screen.
Starring Olivia Hargroder, Boss Cat tells the moving story of Sonja, a Sydney woman whose life changes after her mother’s death. Living with trisomy 21 (Down syndrome), Sonja is passionate about dance and determined to prove to her estranged grandmother that she is capable of living independently. Faced with the prospect of losing both her family home and her freedom, Sonja embarks on a journey of self-discovery, resilience and determination.
The film has already attracted praise for its heartfelt storytelling and authentic performances, while also providing a wonderful opportunity to showcase the landscapes and communities of the Lithgow region to a wider audience.
