Lithgow will soon take centre stage in a national conversation about the future of regional Australia, with the SEGRA 2026 Summit set to bring leaders, thinkers and industry voices to the Central West later this month.
The Summit is one of the few forums in Australia dedicated specifically to regional economic development, transition and community sustainability. By hosting the event in Lithgow, the Central West becomes the focal point for discussions about the challenges and opportunities facing regional communities across the country.
The 2026 theme, “A Future Made in Regional Australia,” reflects the Summit’s focus on strengthening regional economies, supporting community resilience and encouraging collaboration between industry, government and local communities.
Lithgow is a fitting host city. Like many regional centres, the area is experiencing significant change as industries evolve, demographics shift, and national and global policies reshape local economies. SEGRA organisers say these conversations are essential to ensuring regional communities continue to thrive.
“The Summit provides an opportunity to explore practical ideas and solutions that support strong regional economies,” organisers said. “Every speaker, presenter and delegate has something to offer Lithgow and the wider Central West.”
The SEGRA Foundation, a not-for-profit public company dedicated to advancing rural, remote and regional Australia, coordinates the event with the support of volunteer directors across the country. Its mission is to enable positive change by ensuring regional communities are chosen places to live, work and invest.
Local collaboration has also played an important role in bringing the event to Lithgow. Organisers have acknowledged the contributions of the local organising committee, including Jessica Gadd (LEEP), Jess Jennings, Rich and Kellie Evans, as well as event partner Lithgow City Council.
Proceedings will begin on Tuesday, 24 March, with a series of guided regional tours from 1 pm to 4.30 pm, offering delegates a deeper understanding of the region. Options include a Wiradjuri cultural site visit, tours of State Mine Heritage Park and the Lithgow Small Arms Factory Museum, an energy and industry visit to Mt Piper Power Station, and a scenic trip to Hassans Walls Lookout and the Glow Worm Tunnel.
The evening will feature the official Summit Welcome Drinks from 5 pm to 7 pm at the historic Blast Furnace, including a Welcome to Country and a formal address from the Mayor of Lithgow. In line with council policy, the outdoor event will showcase a range of locally crafted non-alcoholic beverages.
The main Summit program will take place on Wednesday, 25 March, beginning at Lithgow’s Union Theatre and concluding at The Foundations in Portland.
