Gulgong audiences are in for a very funny night this November, with one of Australia’s favourite comedians, Mel Buttle, bringing her hit show Taking My Sunglasses Off To Hear You Better to the historic Prince of Wales Opera House.
It’s exactly the kind of show regional audiences would normally expect to travel to Sydney or another capital city to see, but on Saturday 7 November, Central West Comedy is bringing the laughs directly to Gulgong.
And this really is a big-city show heading our way.
Earlier this year, Taking My Sunglasses Off To Hear You Better played a three-show season at the Sydney Opera House, following an extensive tour which has taken Buttle to stages across Australia.
An award-winning comedian, writer and presenter, Buttle first appeared at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival in 2010, earning a Best Newcomer nomination. More recently, her stand-up special Let Me Know Either Way? was nominated for Best Stand-Up Special at the 2025 AACTA Awards.
Many will also know her from television appearances on The Project and Taskmaster Australia, while her wonderfully relatable online mum character “Lyn” has introduced her comedy to a whole new audience.
Her latest show turns the everyday chaos of life, parenting and family into an hour of sharp observations and plenty of laughs.
Theatre Matters described Buttle as “sharp, clever and relatable”, calling the show “a fabulously crafted hour”, while The Advertiser gave it five stars.
Adding to the experience will be the venue itself. Gulgong’s heritage-listed Prince of Wales Opera House dates back to the 1870s and is recognised as the oldest still-operating Opera House in the Southern Hemisphere.
It remains a wonderful part of Gulgong’s cultural story – and a pretty special place to see one of Australia’s leading comedians.
Doors open at 6.30pm on Saturday 7 November, with the show beginning at 7.15pm.
Tickets are $49 plus booking fee – and with a performer of this calibre coming to our doorstep, this could be a great night to gather some friends and enjoy some seriously good comedy, right here in Gulgong.
