Friends of Oberon Library (FOOLS) are inviting book lovers and history enthusiasts to step back in time with a special author event featuring local writer Peter Deakin. Taking place on Friday 27 February 2026 at 6pm at Oberon Library, this free event promises an engaging and immersive evening celebrating storytelling, history and local talent.
Peter will be sharing insights into his latest novel, The Parchment, a gripping historical adventure set during the turbulent year of 641 AD. As Ancient Rome collapses under barbarian invasions and the western world descends into darkness, the story follows a young man named Petrus and his companions as they undertake a perilous journey. Joined by a young woman freed from slavery, the group travels from a remote monastery in the Red Sea Desert, across Sicily and the Italian mainland, racing to deliver a precious parchment to the famous Monte Cassino Monastery. It is a tale of courage, survival and hope during one of history’s most challenging eras.
Readers who enjoy rich historical settings and fast-paced adventure will find much to love in this novel. Peter’s passion for history shines through in the depth of detail and authenticity of the journey, shaped by his extensive travels and on-the-ground research of the locations featured in the book.
After spending most of his adult working life as a barrister, Peter now lives on a farm in the Central West of NSW, where he continues to write and research. Following the release of two non-fiction works, The Parchment marks his first published novel and has already attracted international recognition. In April 2024, Peter received the Critics Award at the Roma International Literary Prize, highlighting the strong response to his storytelling and historical craftsmanship.
The evening will include wine and cheese, providing a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere for guests to meet the author, ask questions and connect with fellow readers.
