One in five Australians are affected by mental illness annually, however early-intervention can play a crucial role in reducing the severity of mental health concerns.
After the events of 2020/21, regional charity Marathon Health, are calling on the community to take advantage of free, early-intervention programs like NewAccess.
Bill Murray, Marathon Health NewAccess Coach, says the NewAccess program makes it simple to access support.
“You don’t need a GP referral for NewAccess – you can make an appointment by visiting our website or calling us,” Mr Murray said.
NewAccess, developed by Beyond Blue, connects people to mental health coaches who support clients to create a plan and get back on track.
“Taking care of your mental health can look different for everyone and if you aren’t ready to speak to someone about it, there are things you can do in your daily life to support your mental wellbeing,” Mr Murray said.
A few key ways to look after mental wellbeing includes setting short-term achievable goals, planning regular exercise or leisure time and re-assessing eating and sleeping habits.
“Some other ideas to help you look after your mental health includes staying connected to friends and family – whether that be through regular phone or video calls or face to face, as well as finding time for yourself to unwind, recharge and practice some self-care,” Mr Murray said.
NewAccess is available via phone, video across Western NSW, while in-person consultations are available in Bathurst and Dubbo. No GP referral is necessary and people aged from 12 and over can access up to six free sessions. For more information about this program visit marathonhealth.com.au/newaccess.
