A warm and distinctly Oberon welcome has been extended to the town’s newest Australian citizen, Neil Backhouse, following a special ceremony marking the occasion.
After more than four decades living in Australia and contributing quietly but meaningfully to both the country and the community, Neil has now formally pledged his allegiance, with citizenship proudly conferred by Oberon Mayor Andrew McKibbin.
The ceremony drew strong local representation, with Andrew Gee and Paul Toole in attendance, underscoring the significance of the milestone.
Continuing a much-loved local tradition, the Rotary Club of Oberon presented Neil with an Australian native plant, a simple but fitting gesture symbolising growth, belonging, and putting down roots.
While the paperwork may have taken 40 years to catch up, Neil’s contribution to the community has long been recognised by those around him.
Now, with the formalities complete, Oberon can proudly count him not just as a long-time local, but as one of its newest Australians.
Congratulations, Neil, and thank you for the role you’ve already played in helping shape the community over many years.
