Australians – and our neighbours across the Tasman – marked World Nutella Day on Thursday 5 February, with breakfast tables lighting up from the Central West to Auckland. As families settled back into school routines, countless slices of toast were generously spread with the much-loved chocolate hazelnut favourite, a staple in households for generations.
What many may not realise is that this globally recognised product is made right here in the Central West. The large Nutella manufacturing plant in Lithgow has been producing the iconic spread for decades and remains a significant local employer and a strong supporter of the wider community. Operated by Ferrero Australia, the Lithgow facility plays a vital role not just in the regional economy, but in supplying Nutella to Australia, New Zealand and parts of East Asia.
With Easter only around the corner, there’s also a timely reminder to try a seasonal favourite with a twist – hot cross buns generously layered with Nutella are fast becoming a modern classic.

The Lithgow factory was recently recognised on the state stage, being named winner of the Primary Industries and Regional Development Award at the Banksia Foundation’s 2025 NSW Sustainability Awards. Announced in Sydney in December, the award highlights Ferrero’s leadership in sustainable regional manufacturing, underpinned by innovation, long-term investment and deep community engagement.
Established in 1976, the Lithgow plant produces more than 15,000 tonnes of Nutella annually and employs approximately 100 people. Judges praised the factory’s clear sustainability vision and measurable results, particularly its progress in reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions in line with the Ferrero Group’s target of a 50 per cent reduction by 2030 against 2018 levels. The site is also working towards becoming thermal-energy free by 2026.
Key initiatives include a rooftop solar array generating up to 20 per cent of the site’s electricity needs, internationally recognised ISO environmental and energy management certifications, and the installation of a vertical electric hazelnut roaster that has cut gas use by nearly 90 per cent.
Ferrero Australia Managing Director Chris Hinton said the award was a testament to the dedication and innovation of the Lithgow team, demonstrating that regional manufacturing can deliver world-class products while significantly reducing environmental impact. Banksia Foundation CEO Graz van Egmond echoed this sentiment, highlighting the strength of Ferrero’s metrics, early results and collaboration with the Lithgow community.
Beyond the factory gates, Ferrero continues to invest locally through support for the Seven Valleys Visitor Centre, school career initiatives and the Lithgow Emerging Economy Plan. As Ferrero celebrates more than 50 years in Australia, Lithgow remains firmly at the heart of its story – bringing a little joy to breakfast tables across Australia and New Zealand, one jar at a time.
