Portland Art Exhibition Celebrates 50 years

For almost half a century, the Portland Art Purchase Society has played a vital role in shaping the cultural life of Portland and the wider Central West. In 2026, that legacy reaches an important milestone, with the Society celebrating 50 years of championing local artists, creativity and community.

Founded in 1976, the Portland Art Purchase Society has become best known for its annual art exhibition, held each March at the historic Crystal Theatre in Wolgan Street. What began as a modest local show has grown into a highly anticipated event, attracting up to 400 artworks each year, predominantly from artists across the region. With around a quarter of exhibited works selling annually, the exhibition has also earned a reputation as a favourite among artists.

Proceeds raised through entry fees and sales commissions are reinvested directly back into the community, supporting regional arts programs, school art prizes throughout the Lithgow LGA and a range of local community groups. It is a model that has ensured the exhibition not only showcases creativity, but actively nurtures it.

The 2026 Portland Art Exhibition opens with a special Opening Night on Friday 6 March from 6:30pm to 9:30pm, featuring canapés and drinks, followed by public exhibition days on Saturday 7 March and Sunday 8 March. This year’s Portland Art Prize invites artists to respond to the theme Reflections of Portland, encouraging interpretations that may draw on memories, history, changing landscapes or literal reflections of the town itself.

Adding to the significance of the year is the Society’s 50th Anniversary Dinner, to be held on Thursday 5 March at the Crystal Theatre. The dinner will bring together artists, supporters and friends of the Society for an evening celebrating five decades of art, community and creativity. Guests can expect a two-course dinner with table wines, along with art-focused entertainment designed to be both engaging and fun.

As Portland continues to evolve, the Portland Art Purchase Society stands as a reminder of the power of long-term community commitment. Fifty years on, its impact can be seen not only on gallery walls, but in classrooms, community and the creative lives of countless local artists.
