‘Two Cellos’ at Eskbank House

Georg Mertens and Ella Jamieson are two great cellists, one the former teacher of the other, playing with a unique passion for the music and an uncanny understanding of each other’s playing!

Georg studied cello at the reputed Staatliche Hochschule fur Musik at Freiburg, Germany and has given concerts in Berlin, Munich, Paris, Brussels, Geneva, Zurich, and Manila. He has also toured Sweden, France and Ireland, and is well known for his 200 solo cello concerts from 1997 to 2013 (performed predominantly in the Central West), which grew into the world’s longest series of cello concerts in history.

Last year Georg started two new concert series, ‘Cello & Chocolate’ (in Katoomba) and ‘Cello Concerts in historic Churches of NSW’ – in which he performs cello solos, as well as duos with friends, in combinations with flute, guitar, violin and of course two cellos.

Georg has recorded eleven CD’s, five of them for cello solo including the complete Suites by J.S. Bach. Seven of Georg’s compositions and arrangements have been selected for the movie “Fils de Grece”, (Greece) and his “Arabian Imrovisation” and “Didgeridoo” are the background music for the German documentary “First Class Asylum”. Georg also edits his own website georgcello.com, which includes – apart from events – groundbreaking studies on the Bach cello suites and lessons on bow technique. These pages are regularly visited by the worlds major universities including Oxford, Cambridge and Harvard, the Juilliard School of Music (New York) and the Royal College of Music London.

Ella is musician with exceptional passion and charisma, Bathurst-born and bred and now Sydney-based, Ella is a pianist and cellist who specialises in solo and chamber performance.

A graduate from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Ella balances a demanding and varied performance schedule, including concert hall recitals, television appearances, radio broadcasts, and studio recordings. She also frequently performs as a soloist at wedding celebrations and private events held at venues including David Jones and the Sydney Convention Centre.

This extensive musical experience has established her as one of the most accomplished young musicians in Sydney. Georg has been teaching cello and Classical guitar at the Mitchell Conservatorium in Bathurst since 1990 and Ella Jamieson started with Georg at the age of seven and completed her diploma 9 years later, still at the MitCon.

For this series of concerts Georg and Ella will perform No 5 and 9 from the beautiful 9 cello Sonatas by Vivaldi, the most beloved of Italian composers. The Sonatas are shared with cello Duo No 1 by August Kummer, the king of Classical cello duo music, injecting an amazing inventiveness and wit into the interactive collaboration of the cellos, along with J.S.Bach’s, Prelude, Allemande and Bourree from Lute Suite No 1, transcribed by Georg for two cellos – a world premiere!

Their concert is on at Friday 10 April at Eskbank House in Lithgow. For more information please call the Mitchell Conservatorium on 6351 3990.
