So I’m going to be a little self-indulgent…..apologies in advance. My biggest girl turned 8 this week and we styled a little, masquerade party at home for her. Here’s the lowdown…..
Initially she decided the whole theme of her party based around a packet of purple, green and yellow cupcake wrappers and toppers that she liked….she was 7 at the time of planning – it was January! and that was what was important to her!! So on we went sourcing bits and pieces around these cupcake cases to match – Oh the fun we’ve had! You see doing a party for your children isn’t hard – so long as you realise that you need to make it about them…..not you!
We worked on this together and I decided to run with the whole masked idea and suggested that she along with her guests could do some art and crafty activities. We found half faced masked that were plain white and set up a craft table with paint, glitter, stickers, feathers, jewels, cardboard etc and gave each guest two plain face masks for them to design however they liked! WOW did my floor (inside!!) look ammmaazzing…..it was covered in a mixed layer of glitter and confetti pieces of paper / cardboard. They were having a blast and I really didn’t need to help out too much, they are at a great independent age. Apologies to all the parents who had to put the completed masks into their cars/ homes as the trail of glitter no doubt ended up at your houses too.
We also purchased inexpensive half face masks that were already completed and decked out beautifully for everyone to use as inspiration and also to take home with them as a little thank you.
Simple nibbles on the craft table – chippies and lollies and the happy little crew went about their business.
We had a lolly table set up with a variety of lollies in the same colours as the cupcake cases and empty lolly bags so the guest could fill up their own lolly bag with the treats that they like – rather than the bags being pre-filled with treats of our choice. This makes for a fun activity for the kids to do, and was also what we used as the “decorations” for the party.
For the first year ever since this mummas been organising parties……..sigh……I didn’t make the cake. I outsourced it from the very lovely and extremely talented Simone from Cakes by Simone. Because my brief (from Miss 7) was extremely detailed and specific and I was terrified that I wouldn’t deliver – so I handed over the blame….um….responsibility to Simone and WOW did she deliver – the cake matched perfectly and it was exactly what the birthday girl wanted! Success! Oh and we went out for dinner the night before rather than the usual me staying up late at home the night before frantic that my cake doesn’t look like the one in the book!
A few simple stylish things put together well and voila, a birthday party success. As always it’ my pleasure giving my children birthday parties and the day ended with the birthday girl saying “Mummy that birthday party was everything I wished it would be”…..sob sob. Where did those 8 years go?
