Vinnies Winter Appeal is currently running in Lithgow, Wallerawang and Portland. The Winter Appeal goes towards families in need of money, clothes, food, coats and other basic living essentials. To donate just drop into your local St Vincent de Pauls.
Donations can be in the form of either goods or money. If donating money to the winter appeal, the amount you donate will be kept confidential. All money raised from the appeal will be sent to head office where the money will then be redistributed where it is needed most, to help the poor with food, accommodation and bills.
Putting food on the table continues to be the major budget item for people, with many forced to rely on charities to make ends meet.
Last financial year, St. Vincent de Paul in Lithgow, Wallerwang, & Portland spent $92,000 on food & food vouchers for local residents. St. Vincent de Paul’s Bathurst Central Council Executive Officer Frank Moses said those on social security or low incomes are often forced to choose between paying for food or paying bills.
The vast majority of St. Vincent de Paul’s clients are on some sort of social security benefits, but there are also aged pensioners and families on low incomes. Those who hit a stumbling block in life often need a hand up from charity, and that’s where St. Vincent de Paul comes in. It doesn’t offer permanent support, but helps people survive during an emergency.
