Last Sunday, June 15, over twenty drivers met for the NRMA Classic Car Club, Portland Drive from Mamre Homestead in St Mary’s to Portland Central School. Twenty-four classic cars lined up at Mamre Homestead to start the drive, and two others joined them along the way to enjoy the sights as they crossed the Blue Mountains. It was a great day. Despite the overcast and decidedly cool weather, all drivers had a great time making friends and enjoying the scenery.
The team of drivers enjoyed breakfast at the restaurant house in the unique heritage building, Mamre House, before making an early departure for Portland, where they arrived in time for lunch. At Portland, the drivers were welcomed at Portland Central School by Janice Jennings and her team, who had prepared an excellent lunch.
The P & C were ably assisted by Principal Murray Borham in providing a BBQ lunch for the weary travellers in the school’s community centre.
Mayor Maree STatham also dropped in to greet the visitors and was happy to pose next to a 1960 MG-A, owned by Sandra Collins.
The drivers all reported that the mechanical skills of NRMA Patrol David Scott were not taxed too greatly as almost all of the cars behaved themselves. David said at lunch that he was delighted that he now has set personal best ‘response time’ of 45 seconds to arrive at a car in distress. Of course, this was because he was right behind the car, only 1.1 km out of Mamre House.
The feedback from the drive was very positive, with several emails from people saying how much they enjoyed the run.
